Designed for professional use, this rack-mounting, solid-state, digital recorder has digital, as well as balanced and unbalanced analogue, audio connections. Recordings are made on Compact Flash card or Microdrive media in 16 or 24-bit MP3 or WAV file formats. These may be transferred to a computer via USB or LAN; and the unit may be also controlled over the network from a Web browser. RS-232C serial remote control is also provided.
Connected by USB, (PC or Mac) computer sees the recording media as an external drive, recorded audio files can be dragged-and-dropped as required. Using the LAN connector, the recorder may appear as a client on a standard IP network, and be controlled from computers elsewhere on the network. Features include a pre-record buffer, programmable record start and stop times, an internal clock/calendar for automatic file identification and a useful set of EDL functions for on-board editing.
The front panel has a power with blue LED indicator and a 6.35mm 3-pole jack socket, with level control, for headphones. A protective flap opens to give access to the socket for the removable recording media; the flap may be locked with a pin (included). A green LED illuminates to show card presence and to confirm read/write activity. Large, illuminated 'Rec', 'Rec Pause', 'Stop' / 'Cancel' and 'Play/Pause' buttons are provided. A multi-purpose jog- wheel performs audio search and next/previous functions, selection of EDL marks, recording level and balance adjustment and menu navigation. A 'Menu/Store' / 'Utility' button accesses the menu system, selects menu options or presets, and confirms erasure of tracks or EDL marks. A large backlit LCD display shows track and time data as well as the menus. Time data in the display may be changed with the 'Display' / 'Lock' button. A 'Shift' key enables alternate control functions for several of the controls, including the ability to disable all controls on the front panel during recording. The USB socket for file transfer is on the front, as are separate left and right LED bargraph meters for monitoring record and playback level.
The rear panel has two pairs of XLR connectors for balanced, analogue, line input and output, and two pairs of RCA (phono) connectors for the same signals in unbalanced form. Digital input and output are also available, in balanced AES/EBU format on XLR connectors and unbalanced S/PDIF on RCA (phono) sockets. Serial RS-232C remote control is available on a 9-pin female D-sub socket. A 2-pole 6.35mm jack socket permits simple contact-closure remote control; user-set functions include start, pause and manual track increment. An RJ-45 socket connects the PMD580 to a standard Ethernet network, permitting file transfer and control of the unit from a standard Web browser. AC power is connected through an IEC socket.
