Matthew was named runner-up of the award, sponsored by EAL, for his grit and determination both prior to securing his apprenticeship and since. In his first year he has made noteworthy contributions at work, way beyond what is expected from someone with just 12 months’ experience. The judges recognised he has developed quickly in maturity and is able to work alongside and influence more experienced colleagues and peers.

Matthew was named joint runner-up of the award along with Sion Lloyd, an apprentice at JCB Transmissions, from Chester, and the winner of the award was Aiden Rogers, an apprentice at Rolls-Royce plc in Derby.

Julia Chippendale, Managing Director of EAL, the specialist awarding organisation for industry qualifications, said: “First of all, I’d like to say huge congratulations to Matthew. It is testament to his hard work and dedication that he has been acknowledged in the prestigious EEF Future Manufacturing Awards 2013. Apprentices are such a vital part of the future of the engineering and manufacturing industry and it is great to see such outstanding talent being recognised for their efforts.”

Andy Tuscher, Region Director for Yorkshire and the North East, said: “Ensuring that the UK has future engineers, team leaders and managers is essential to long economic prosperity, which is why it is essential to nurture the talents of apprentices such as Matthew. His enthusiasm is infectious and I hope that his passion and interest encourages more young people to become engineers.”
