For use in applications such as radio, TV, music studio, and background or foreground audio playback, this versatile design has an embedded web server offering a graphical interface to networked computers. It is also capable of play-back from networked resources, and uploading of audio material. In addition to network control it has wireless infra red and wired contact-closure and RS232C remote control. Audio interfacing is comprehensive, including balanced analogue and digital outputs.

Compatible disc types include CD-DA, CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW. Audio formats are CD-A, WAV, mp3, mpg, wma. Text files can be CD-Text and ID3 v1/v2.
The DN-C640 can play media stored on a network resource such as a PC, server or NAS equipment which offers shared folders using Windows-style protocols (including CIFS, SMB, Samba equivalents). It uploads from local media to such resources using the same protocol.
The front panel has a disc loading slot, play/pause, skip, and cue transport controls and a 100mm LCD display for status and menu information. A jog wheel with push-to-enter function controls the menu operations and the varispeed playback facility. Other controls include network and menu selection, and keys for operations such as A/B looping, text play mode and key lock-out. The power switch has an associated LED indicator; the 6.35mm headphone socket a level control. The web interface may be used for assembly of play-lists for upload or playback.
The rear has XLR connectors for the balanced analogue and AES stereo outputs, two pairs of RCA (phono) unbalanced analogue, one fixed and one variable level with recessed level trim controls, and a further RCA (phono) connector for SPDIF. The RS232C and remote control connections are 9-pin and 25-pin D-Sub connectors respectively. An RJ45 socket connects to the network.
