CDR 310 CD and Hard Disk Portable Recorder
This lightweight portable recorder can be used for many applications where the integrity and rapid transportability of the recording is crucial. The CDR310 has two balanced, 48V phantom powered microphone inputs, SPDIF digital and RCA (phono) line inputs and outputs, Recording capacity to the internal hard disk using MP3 format is up to 55 hours of stereo or 110 hours mono. With CD-DA, WAV, AIFF formats , 5 hours of stereo or 10 hours of mono are possible. Powering is by battery, rechargeable battery or AC mains. Recordings may be transferred to CD-R, using the internal drive, to provide back-up copies, or for distribution to colleagues.
In addition to 'one-touch' recording, the device offers several facilities to ensure that all audio is captured even if the operator is caught unawares. With 'Pre Recording' mode, a continuous window of up to ten seconds of audio is stored automatically as soon as the unit is powered up with external microphone(s) connected. After recording has begun, when 'Record Pause' is selected, perhaps due to a break in the proceedings, 'Background Recording' commences automatically, so if the pause button is pressed, the system continues to record the incoming audio into buffer memory on the hard disk. After recording is resumed with a further press of the 'Record Pause' key, the machine offers the option of keeping the audio from the paused period and including that audio in the list of files to be burned to CD when the session is finished. 'Silence Skip' causes recording to stop and start automatically at the preset, adjustable, input threshold. Again, the system will have stored up to ten seconds of audio before the start threshold level is reached in order to ensure that no information is missed. Audio segments can only be deleted by pressing UNDO after that recording is stopped.
When the recording session is over, the contents of the hard drive can then burned to the CD-R drive. If the total length of the audio segments chosen exceeds the storage capacity of the CD in the chosen format, then the 'Split Disc' option will be presented, allowing the contents of the hard drive to be spread across several discs. All key recording options, including input type, record format (stereo, mono, CD-DA, WAVE, MP3, AIFF), record level, microphone attenuation, phantom power, CD split, remote mode, can be stored as one of three presets. The three presets come with factory defaults to cover the most common applications, but can be customised to suit individual circumstances.
The 100mm LCD display is used in combination with a large jog or shuttle wheel to control set-up, record, playback and CD burning menus and shows recorded time, remaining time, input status, record format and status as well as and record or playback level metering, with peak hold, as the default. The sub-menus allow selection of microphones, digital SPDIF or analogue line inputs, and control of phantom power, microphone attenuation (-20dB), automatic level control, 'Silent Skip' record threshold and record gain level, which is also adjustable, via the jog wheel, whilst recording is in progress.
In addition to the display and jog wheel, the upper panel has menu select, display backlight, one-touch 'Make CD' and CD or hard disk playback buttons. Two menu control buttons, fast reverse, fast forward and Play/pause keys. A safety-guarded power switch, large red Record button, the 'Record Pause' and Stop buttons complete the control layout. The left side houses the two XLR microphone inputs and the RCA (phono) analogue and SPDIF line inputs and outputs. One 2.5mm and one 3.5mm jack sockets provide for two different remote controls, one a simple assignable contact closure type, the other for the optional RC600 dedicated remote control. The front of the unit has the CD slot, draw-open button, key-lock and speaker-off switches, headphone socket (6.35mm) and speaker/headphone volume control.
