ASC WORKSTATION BUDDY
The ASC Workstation Buddy (also formerly known as “Buddy Senior”) is a compact interfacing and monitoring unit, ideal for “workstation” editing, programme compilation, remote contributions, or other areas where a full broadcast type mixer is not appropriate. It is also available with a built-in telephone hybrid as an option.
The Workstation Buddy accepts microphone, mono and stereo line-level sources and has loudspeaker, headphone and illuminated LED PPM monitoring. The front panel has combined jack and XLR sockets for microphone as well as left, right and mono line inputs. A 3.5mm stereo mini-jack socket is provided, suitable for portable cassette and MiniDisc machines. Mono and stereo inputs may be combined for added flexibility. There are four level-control knobs (mic, line, telephone and monitor volume) a “tape”/source monitor switch and a divert switch for the optional telephone balance unit. The display includes a three-colour 14 section stereo PPM and indicators for power supply, phantom power, mono, monitor mute and limiter operation indicators. The internal loudspeaker can be muted either by the use of headphones, when the mic is live or permanently (for when an external speaker is used). Headphone connection is a long-frame 6.35mm jack, which accepts both A-gauge and B-gauge jacks. The headphone output is wired stereo, but an internal selector switch reconfigures this to “BBC Split Feed” if required.
The rear panel has XLR connectors for workstation (or recorder) inputs and outputs, and a main output to feed lines or other equipment. There is also an external monitor, balanced (mono) output and separate stereo jack output. There are switches for mono or stereo operation and for 48V phantom power on the mic input. Supply connections are IEC mains inlet and outlet (for connection of other equipment).
The telephone balance unit option provides a broadcast-quality hybrid with rear-panel line and handset telephone sockets and front-panel divert switch.
A console which houses the Buddy above desk level, and on which, typically, the VDU would stand is also available. To special order, the console can be supplied incorporating a passive 8-way source selector.
