FLOATER ACOUSTIC SUSPENSION
Manufactured by Ambient Recording, specialists in location recording equipment, the Floater is intended for use with microphone stands, booms and fishpoles, to acoustically isolate today’s highly sensitive (particularly stereo) microphones from floor vibration effects and boom handling noise. The device is particularly effective when used with basket type windshields, which can cause extra problems. Sound travels up the boom and is isolated from the microphone by the suspension inside the windshield. Unfortunately, the boom noise will be mechanically coupled to the windshield, which re-transmits it to the microphone. The use of the Floater to decouple the windshield prevents this “short circuit”.
The suspension is supplied at set at medium grade tension, which is user adjustable. The selection of a suitable grade depends to some extent upon the severity of boom movement, but if the Floater is used in a static situation, e.g. on a mic stand to reduce rumble, then a softer Floater can be used, which will give more acoustic isolation.
It is supplied with 3/8" threaded fittings. A “Rycote flange” adapter is also included which shortens the distance between the Floater and the Windshield, thus reducing bending moment and mechanical distortion.
