Boundary or 'plate' microphones have a wide range of applications in both music and speech recording. They are particularly useful for dialogue recording in discussion or group work, as they are effectively omni-directional and not unduly sensitive to small changes in distance as people move around. The MB design has a particularly flat and wide response, using a measurement-grade electret capsule.
This circular plate microphone uses the same 5mm electret capsule employed in the MBNM550E-L measurement microphone, offering a frequency response within +/-1dB from 20Hz to 20kHz. It is mounted in a cantilever arrangement which places the diaphragm 1mm from the plate which forms a boundary. This assures that a pure pressure response is provided, as the space between the diaphragm and boundary is a small fraction of the wavelength at any audio frequency. The cantilever body also holds the XLR connector.
Output impedance: 200 ohms. Power: 18-52 volts phantom (P48). Dimensions: 160mm diameter, 22mm high.
Application note: Low frequency performance of all boundary microphones is affected by the size of the boundary. For this reason they are best used placed on a floor or fixed to a wall.
Optional accessories: 52-302 is Canford's standard type, with a shiny surface.
