The Roland R-88 is a robust, portable, multi-track audio recorder for professional applications such as location recording, surround sound and concert use where simultaneous recording of up to eight channels plus a stereo mix is required.
The R-88 records eight tracks plus a two-channel stereo mix at 24-bits, 96kHz, or four tracks of 24-bits, 192kHz uncompressed, linear PCM files to a SD/SDHC memory card (up to a maximum capacity of 32GB). Operating at lower bit-rates, the R-88 will record up to 100 hours on a single card. Eight microphone/line-level inputs are provided on XLR connectors, each capable of providing 48V phantom power, individually controlled by latching switches.
Each channel has equalisation, a limiter and low-cut filter. The limiter helps deliver a stable and reliable recording free of clipping and sudden input surges, while the filter can reduce wind and microphone handling-noise. The eight channel mixer provides three-band equalisation, fader, limiter, pan and stereo channel-link controls. An analogue output provides the stereo mix on a single 3.5mm stereo jack socket.
AES/EBU XLR connections provide digital input capability and a stereo mix output from the internal mixer. The large touch-screen display makes for intuitive menu navigation, control and adjustment.
Monitoring is available from a 6.35mm jack socket for headphones and a built-in stereo monitor speaker, the level of which is controlled from a rotary knob. A high speed USB memory port, type A female, allows quick and simple backup of files to readily available USB flash drives. In addition, a USB port, type B mini female, enables the copying of files to or from computers. The USB port can also be utilised as a 10-in 8-out audio interface. There are four powering options; alkaline battery (8x AA), rechargeable Ni-MH (8x AA), PSB-1U AC adapter (supplied) or external battery (4-pin XLR 9-16V).
Handling SMPTE timecode I/O via BNC connectors, the R-88 can operate in slave mode to video cameras or VTRs. Additionally the R-88 can operate as the master, sending out timecode to slave devices. Further workflow aids are included, such as a slate facility from an onboard microphone for memo recording and slate tone, 1kHz, -20dBFS, and two remote control inputs which allow control of play, record, rewind and more via optional foot switches.
