SDV-L-SR - HDTV, SERIAL DIGITAL AND ANALOGUE VIDEO CABLE Low loss, sheep resistant
Canford’s Technical Support team regularly receive requests for advice about cables that can be installed in situations more physically demanding than the average studio complex, and this special variant of our highest performance HDTV and digital/analogue video coax cable has been developed to suit a number of these more unusual installation applications.
One request was for an outdoor environment cable, where a “conventional” video cable had been laid for several hundred metres across fields to a remote camera being used for the monitoring of rare bird nesting. The picture quality had deteriorated over a period of time, and was found to be due to sheep nibbling at the cables, puncturing the jacket, thus allowing moisture to get in, with a consequent degradation of transmission performance. A solution was to use an outer jacket material that is harder and more “slippery” than PVC, which is known to be more resistant to most animal teeth (although it should be noted that to make a cable “rodent proof”, more expensive armoured constructions are required).
A much more common problem concerns cables laid in underground ducts between buildings, or flown on overhead gantries outdoors. Ducts may become waterlogged at times, and also suffer from occasional oil contamination. Outdoor installation also requires a better resistance to UV light. Whilst this cable is not suitable for continuous immersion in water or oils, it provides a better level of protection than those with normal PVC or PUR jackets.
SDV-L-SR is technically identical to standard SDV-L, except that the jacket material is replaced by a heavy duty polyethylene-based compound. This makes no difference to the electrical properties, but the cable is a little stiffer. Canford Group Y connectors are suitable.

Rodent resistance
More complex constructions are needed to achieve resistance to rodents (sheep are quite nice really!), with several techniques being available according to the scale of the problem and the cable installation location. These can be applied to several Canford design cables and manufactured to special order, please contact Tech Support for further information.
