TASCAM PORTABLE COMPACT FLASH AND MICRODRIVE RECORDER - HD-P2

This stereo, portable recorder, designed for live and location applications, stores audio data on a removable Compact Flash card or Microdrive. Balanced analogue inputs are provided using XLR connectors. Digital line inputs and outputs, comprehensive synchronisation facilities and a Firewire connection for high-speed transfer to a computer are included. Recordings are made with sampling-rates of up to 192kHz, either 16 or 24-bit, directly onto Compact Flash cards in Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) for immediate use by external editing systems.

Sampling frequency can be selected between 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 76.4 and 192kHz, either 16 or 24-bits. A dedicated SMPTE/ EBU time-code input, using an XLR connector, enables synchronisation to external devices during record or playback. The time-code input also makes it possible to add time-stamps to the BWF audio data file. Synchronisation to an external video black-burst source, or tri-level sync for HDTV production, is provided with a BNC connector. Pull-up or pull-down frame-rates are included for worldwide video-format compatibility. Manual or automatic entry of time-based markers may be made within a selected project file. Specific marker types for events such as audio clipping or time-code drop-out are available as user options. A built-in dynamic Edit Decision List (EDL) orders file-playback based on file record-start times. Maximum file size is limited to 2GB by the file system. If this is exceeded, the HD-P2 will continue recording to a new file. Software is included, compatible with Windows XP and Macintosh OSX -10.3, which may be used to conform the files into one single file.

The two balanced, XLR, microphone/line input connectors are associated with a single phantom-power switch, individual input level controls, analogue peak-limiting with a single switch, a fixed-frequency high-pass filter, again with a single switch, and two 20dB pad switches for left and right channels. Digital S/PDIF and unbalanced stereo line-level inputs and outputs are provided with RCA connectors. The headphone output with variable level control has a 6.35mm jack socket. An in-built electret microphone and monitor loudspeaker cater for desktop interview applications. A standard computer keyboard may be connected to a PS/2 socket for entering track or marker names; the keyboard can also be used to perform remote transport and system control operations. The removable-media slot is located at the side of the recorder. A compartment on the base of the recorder takes eight AA batteries; alkaline or NiMH types are recommended. Note that the recorder does not charge the batteries. Operating time is up to five hours, using alkaline types.

The front panel has a 240 x 160 pixel, backlit LCD screen providing audio level-metering, status information and control menus. In addition to traditional transport controls, including locate and marker keys, the HD-P2 has a 'Retake' key which allows the current take and associated markers to be deleted, and the device to relocate to the beginning of the last recording. A flush-mounted shuttle/data wheel is used for precise location within an audio take, or for scrolling through the menu structure.
