Sound Devices field mixers have been designed with the flexibility of both mixing and recording at broadcast quality on location. Compact and lightweight structure along with power efficiency and durability are features Sound Devices incorporate into their designs.

This five-channel location mixer has a wide range of analogue and digital connectivity along with on-board recorder for stand-alone use. Recorded files are broadcast wave-compatible WAV or MP3, on removable SD/SDHC memory cards. 552 mixes five microphone or line inputs to two outputs. Both analogue and digital outputs are available. Each input channel has a direct output, selectable pre- or post-fade. Channel fader, input gain and high-pass filter sweep-frequency are all adjustable with dedicated, conventional rotary controls, per-channel. The mixer has two stereo returns and flexible headphone monitoring options. The digital outputs can be synchronised to external word clock, and the recorded files are time-stamped either to the internal calendar/clock, or an external time-code source. A voice-prompt system in the headphone outputs assist menu and setup navigation without recourse to the visual display.

All controls are on the front panel. For each input, there is a large, rotary, channel-fader, rotary controls for input gain, hi-pass filter frequency, 80Hz to 240Hz, 6 or 12dB/octave, pan, and a soft-latching PFL switch. All channels have a tri-colour LED for signal presence / limiter action / overload and a blue LED indicating line input selection. Other blue LEDs indicate phantom power (12 or 48V), MS pairing mode, stereo pairing mode and phase-reverse (not all are per-channel). The master section has rotary controls for master output level, headphone source selection and headphone level, and switches for limiter in/out, stereo return PFL, line-up tone / slate microphone, and power on/off. A check button displays internal and external battery voltages and announces current date, time and unused memory. A miniature four-way cursor button controls the integral recorder, combining record/stop/play/fast forward/rewind functions. A dual, 21-segment LED bar-graph meters left and right outputs; a Zoom mode, selected by a push function of the headphone source selector, increases resolution in the 0 to 20dBu range. The meter incorporates LEDs indicating output limiter activity. The meters also act as the display for all menu and setup functions. Other LEDs indicate selection of meter Zoom mode, valid time code input, active AES3 output, record mode (tri-colour), slate or tone active, power (tri-colour), stereo return signal presence / clip / monitor selected (tri-colour) and headphone clipping.

There are five XLRs for balanced microphone or line-level inputs and five TA3 connectors for balanced direct outputs. All other connections, including two XLRs for balanced analogue master outputs, which may be menu-selected as AES3 digital outputs instead, are located on the right panel. Both 6.35mm and 3.5mm 3-pole headphone jack sockets are provided. A duplicate balanced analogue master output is available on TA3 connectors (remain active if XLRs are set to AES3) and an unbalanced mono microphone mix output (for IFB transmitters, etc.) is provided on a 3.5mm 2-pole jack socket. A low-level unbalanced version of the master output 'Tape Out' is available on both a TA3 connector and a 3.5mm 3-pole stereo jack socket. A 10-pin Hirose connector provides a further, transformer-isolated, balanced master analogue output and Stereo Return A input (unbalanced). This connector may be selected to output various pre- or post-fade per-channel feeds in AES3 digital format if wished. Stereo return B input has a dedicated TA3 connector, and doubles as the time code input. There are multi-pin connectors for external power connection and linking to additional Sound Devices mixers. A set of four 3-position slide switches set the analogue output levels at the XLR and 10-pin connectors.

A six-input mixer and compact 10-track field recorder with 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97DF, 29.97ND, 30DF, 30ND timecode frame rates – supporting off, Rec Run, Free Run, 24h Run, and external modes. Recorded files are broadcast wave-compatible WAV or MP3, to removable SD/CF memory cards. The user can employ Dugan and MixAssist auto-mixing between up to six of the available input channels - particularly useful for teleconferencing, video trucks and theatre applications. Operation can be aided via the remote Wingman app for iOS or android bases smartphones or tablets, when used with the optional WM-Connect Bluetooth smart USB accessory.

The front facing panel of the 633 has large rotary controllers for input channels 1-3, mini-rotary controllers for input channels 4-6, and both trim and pan controllers for channels 1-3. Trim and pan control for inputs 4-6 can be achieved via their respective input setting menu options. PFL toggle switches allow the use of PFL for all input channels, whilst individual LEDs illuminate to show the input activity of all channels. An LCD display positioned to the right side of the front facing panel shows a variety of displays including input, output, transport and menu options. Transport control, meters button – to cycle between meter views; rotary encoder for selections, headphone encoder, and menu buttons are positioned either side of the screen. Main power switch is position to the upper right side, along with timecode and power on LED indicators. Slate LED, headphone clipping LED, mic/tone toggle switch, and rtn/fav toggle switch are positioned under the LCD screen.

The left side of the unit houses three active-balanced XLR input connectors – input one can also be used for AES3 or AES42 input signals; three active-balanced TA3 line level inputs, unbalanced 3.5mm TRS multipurpose connection, and access to the battery compartment which holds six alkaline AA batteries or NiMH rechargeable cells. The right side of the 633 has a USB-B connector for keyboard connection (when used with adaptor), compact flash slot, SD card slot, 2x balanced line/mic level main outputs, 10-18V DC power input, timecode I/O on 5-pin Lemo connector, 6.35mm TRS jack headphone output, and 2x transformer-balanced 3-pin XLR outputs for main audio output. The 12-track 833 mixer-recorder has six inputs that use 8-series mic preamps and 64-bit audio processing, also found in the 888 mixer-recorder. An internal SSD of 256GB enables the user to record audio directly to the unit. The recorder also has two SD card slots, with the ability to record simultaneously to both SD cards and internal SSD. The user can employ Dugan and MixAssist auto-mixing between up to eight of the available input channels, and 3-band equalisation can be applied to each channel in either pre-fade or post-fade setup. Operation can be aided via the companion android app – ‘SD-Remote’, giving access to transport controls, metering, and sound reports.

The front facing panel of the 833 is very similar to that of the 633, therefore familiar with the layout 6-series mixer/recorder. 833 has large rotary volume controllers for input channels 1-3, mini-rotary volume controllers for input channels 4-6, and trim controllers for channels 1-6. The trim controllers are surrounded by LEDs that indicate whether the channel signal is in solo, mute, on or off status. Three PFL toggle switches, grouped to channels 1/4, 2/5, and 3/6; allow the use of PFL for input channels. An LCD display positioned to the right side of the front facing panel shows a variety of displays including input, output, transport and menu options. A button titled ‘Meters’, situated to the left of the LCD allows the user to cycle between meter views, whilst a headphone encoder knob that is positioned to the bottom right of the LCD enables the user to control the headphone output level, and select and navigate the headphone setup menu. Main power toggle is position to the upper right side, along with power on LED indicator. Mic/tone toggle switch, ‘*/**’ switch, and rtn/fav toggle switch are positioned under the LCD screen. The red coloured transport controller is used to start/stop recording, with LED ring flashing orange when in post roll, and red when recording.

The left side of the unit houses three active-balanced XLR input connectors – input one can also be used for AES3 or AES42 input signals; three active-balanced TA3 mic/line inputs, unbalanced 3.5mm TRS jack headphone socket, Com return on TA3, and TA5 connection for headphone/headset/external slate.

The right side of the 833 has a USB-A connector for keyboard connection or third party controllers, USB-C connection for file transfer or 2-in/2-out USB audio streaming, two SD card slots, 10-18V DC power input on TA4, timecode/word clock I/O on 5-pin Lemo connector, and 6.35mm TRS jack headphone output. RP-SMA connection allows use of the included external antenna for Bluetooth LE. X1 and X2 outputs are by way of TA3 connection, whilst X3/X4 are by way of shared unbalanced 3.5mm connector. The main outputs are by way of 2x 3-pin XLR balanced line/mic level main outputs, and can also be set to send AES3 digital output signals.

The rear of the unit can dock up to two L-mount batteries, which can be charged in situ when using and external DC power source to power the 833. The top panel of the 833 has a hidden expansion port connector for use with the optional XL-AES 8-channel AES3 input expander.
