SONIFEX TELEPHONE BALANCE UNITS

These telephone balance units automatically compensate for variable line resistance and reactance whilst the line is connected. All units in the range are fully approved by BABT with “green dot” approval S/3619/23/L/501792 and are compliant with European PTT specifications.

HY-03 Analogue telephone hybrid

Sonifex HY-03 telephone hybrid is the replacement for the HY-02, which for many years has set the standard as an excellent value, high quality telephone hybrid. As well as other extra features the HY-03 also includes a ringing detector as standard. When using the HY-03 the telephone line is isolated from the equipment by a disconnection barrier and an approved line transformer, and may be switched between a local handset and the equipment by means of an illuminated “LINE CONNECT” switch which also serves as an “ON” and “RING” indicator. When switched to “LINE CONNECT” the equipment holds the telephone call. This switch function can be operated remotely.

HY-03 may be used with 0dBu clean feed input signals, or alternatively, direct connection of a microphone input, which is adjustable between 74db to 40dB on a rear preset adjustment, may be used. The balanced clean feed input has a bandpass filter, and is limited to give peak levels of +4dBu at the telephone line. The output circuitry processes the telephone signal to give 0dBu output from the equipment, and then balances or rejects the clean feed signal automatically under varying line conditions. The rejection is constantly reviewed during the presence of clean feed signals to optimise the equipment for prevailing line conditions. The telephone signal is processed through a bandpass filter and noise gate which downward expands during no signal conditions to eliminate line cross talk and associated noise.

The output is a 3-pin male XLR connector with a nominal level of 0dBu balanced low impedance. The level is adjustable between +8db to -14dB on a rear preset adjustment. The output can also be set as a mix of the caller and mic/line input signals to allow a recording of both sides of a telephone conversation.

The included ringing detector allows the HY-03 to auto answer incoming calls. It can be pre-set to answer incoming calls on either the first ringing cadence through to the sixth ringing cadence. The “LINE CONNECT” switch is illuminated each time a ringing cadence is present, and an opto-coupler presents an active open collector output suitable for driving a white light indicator on the remote connection. The unit is fitted with K-break disconnection (UK use) as standard but an optional HY-03DTD board is available to equip the HY-03 for disconnection upon detecting dial-tone.

Ordering note: Standard models do not operate with the Broadcast Bionics PhoneBox system, a special version is required. Please contact Technical Support for details.

DHY-03 DSP based telephone hybridDiscontinued

This digital version of the industry standard HY-03 uses Digital Signal Processing to give much enhanced performance over the more established types, for use where the best quality telephone interfacing is required, typically in broadcast phone-in and news/sport applications.

The send and receive paths are transformer balanced and isolated, and connect to the other equipment via XLR style connectors, with input and output gain controls for ±6dB adjustment. Independent LED bargraph metering of send and receive levels aids set-up, the illuminating “connect” or “divert” switch has remote control facilities, and K-break, reverse polarity and dial tone disconnect functions are provided for the phone line, which connects via and RJ11 socket for the line and for the telephone handset.

Analogue limiting, controlled by the DSP, prevents overload, whilst the unit automatically reacts to changing line conditions and programme content. The use of DSP increases the unwanted sideband rejection to 72dB (measured using tone, ref. 0dBu peak output), and offers full adaptive echo cancellation to 127msec default is set to 24msec.

Other features on this unit are built-in conferencing for 2 hybrids (using the optional DHY-03CONF conferencing cable), so that a single telco channel on a mixing desk can receive 2 calls, an integrated ring detector that can automatically answer calls after 2, 4 or 6 rings, DTMF tone detection to assist in studio automation and automatic “ducking” facility to allow the user to talk-over a caller by reducing the caller signal gain if the user level exceeds a threshold, allow the DHY-03 to take on many roles.

A Eurocard version of the DHY-03 is available, with a DIN 41612 connector, which requires an external BABT approved power supply. This offers similar electronic features as the cased units, but is not fitted with XLR connectors and controls, is without mic input and conference function and levels are shown on dual LEDs.

ETSI approval compliant with European PTT specifications (EC version is BABT approved for number S/3619/3/L/501782 only).

Dimensions (WxDxH): 218 x 45 x 175mm, DHY-03; 483 x 45 x 175mm, DHY-03S or T

DHY-04 DSP based telephone hybrid

DHY-04 series is the ‘redesign of DHY-03’ telephone hybrid units with the addition of Ethernet connectivity. Ethernet connectivity enables the engineer to configure and control the unit via a remote web browser. The addition of AES/EBU digital inputs, along with analogue audio inputs give for better quality and performance, whilst the addition of speed dial buttons, located on the front panel, aids ergonomic usage.

Other features of the DHY-04 include dial tone recognition (DTMF), which allows a remote caller to dial in using a pre-programmed password and automatically connect to on-air status. Like the DHY-03, DHY-04 offers full adaptive echo cancellation to 127msec default is set to 24msec, however DSP increases the unwanted sideband rejection to 70dB (measured using tone, ref. 0dBu peak output) as opposed to 72dB of the DHY-03.

Dimensions (WxDxH): 218 x 45 x 175mm, DHY-04; 483 x 45 x 175mm, DHY-04S or T

Versions available:

DHY-04 Single unit, freestanding
DHY-04S Single unit, rackmounting
DHY-04T Twin unit, rackmounting

DHY-04G DSP based GSM hybrid

DHY-04G series has the same functionality as the DHY-04, however in place of landline telephone connection it uses a GSM card to connect callers on 2G/GSM cellular network, enabling compatibility to a 4-wire input and output of the studio. This feature can be implemented by inserting a valid SIM card into a slot on the rear facing panel of the DHY-04G. The GSM feature makes the unit particularly useful in OB vans or where suitable landline connection can’t be accessed.

Dimensions (WxDxH): 218 x 45 x 175mm, DHY-04G; 483 x 45 x 175mm, DHY-04GS or GT

Versions available:

DHY-04G Single unit, freestanding
DHY-04GS Single unit, rackmounting
DHY-04GT Twin unit, rackmounting

DHY-04HD DSP based HD voice and GSM hybrid

DHY-04HD works in a similar way to the DHY-04G but instead uses a 3G SIM card to connect callers on 3G cellular network, and via HD Voice wideband audio – resulting in a cleaner, higher quality audio input.

Dimensions (WxDxH): 218 x 45 x 175mm, DHY-04HD; 483 x 45 x 175mm, DHY-04HDS or HDT

Versions available:

DHY-04HD Single unit, freestanding
DHY-04HDS Single unit, rackmounting
DHY-04HDT Twin unit, rackmounting
